She gets demoted to a lesser guard on his security team, but she keeps thinking about the man she saw in the water that looked just like her. After a horrible incident during Princes Night where Caulden was nearly killed, she gets into trouble with the queen for entering the sacred place where she's been told she's not allowed to go. She has been friends with the prince, Caulden, since they were kids and now is how lead guard. The main character is different from everybody else in her land because when she was born she was 'cursed' by fire and has rough dark skin that only comes off in water and touching her will burn anyone else.

I received an Audible book to review, and I can't tell you just how impressed I was with this story! I was able to listen to this book while I was driving out of town so I had plenty of opportunity to listen nonstop. This is my first book from author JM Miller, and I was seriously impressed.

I love how the book ended on such a dreamy moment of hope and promise for Vala leading into her next adventure! There was never a dull moment from one moment to the next. Which sort of broke my heart at first but I was happy the way things worked out. New revelations are revealed to her and a new love interst as well. There's a mixture of rich characters you grow to love. The action and mysterious circumstances that will change Vala's life forever start happening pretty fast once you get into the world building.

This narrator did a great job of emoting everything the characters were feeling throughout. The story of Vala, an orphaned girl raised in a chateau with a prince she protects due to her unusual skin affliction, grabbed my attention with the first pages read. Thankfully I have a job that affords me 6/7 hours a day to myself driving around, so I was happy when the audiobook became available. I had been wanting to read this book for a while but I never found the time to get invested like the story deserves. Captivating narration for a wondrous story
